II. The New World: Life on Not-Earth

Returning Home

The not-cats came to Not-Earth to find a massive expanse of long-overgrown wilderness stretching in every direction. Mountains and forests and prairies and seas, all set out before them to explore and discover - and yet, something about Not-Earth felt so familiar, like home, like when you drive past a house you used to live in 30 years ago and haven't visited since, only to notice that the entire landscaping has been changed and someone built a parking lot behind it. They almost had an instinctual sense of which directions to go within the woods, but everything felt so... strange and alien at the same time.

As more and more not-cats filter through the Gate into Nestor's Wood, more and more little villages pop up across the countryside. The not-cats of these villages trade with each other at the largest city, Gardenhome, and begin to explore the lands around them. Some intend to someday move their villages outside of Nestor's Wood when new regions are explored, and it is certain that over the coming years, the not-cats will slowly re-settle the lands of Not-Earth.

The Regions of Not-Earth

Not-Earth is a single continent that has been divided into a number of different regions, each with their own native species, environments, and secrets to uncover. Currently the list of regions is as follows:

Nestor's Wood: At the center of the continent of Not-Earth is a large, forested area with a crescent-shaped lake at the center. Nestor's Wood is the home region of the Guardian Nestor and the Not-Cat species.

The rest of the regions are still undiscovered!

Archaeology and Lost Civilizations

Not-Earth is described as long-overgrown rather than untouched because the pawprint of the distant past echoes throughout the entirety of the continent. It was clear to see that someone was here, long before them. Ruined buildings, lost and crumbling runestones, and trinkets hidden buried in the dirt lie scattered across the world. And yet, not a local cat to be found. What happened to the previous creatures who used to live here, and are there any still remaining? The not-cats do not know the answers to these questions yet, but they hope to find out someday.

Archaeology has been the study of choice for many not-cats seeking to unravel the history of their people, though the answers they seek may not all be found. The only ones who know what happened here are Nestor... and the large host of ghosts that make the world their home.

As part of this archaeology, the not-cats have rediscovered their ancestors' ancient writing system. They've managed to decode numerous artifacts and some scribes have even begun writing using the system again.

Not all characters fall into these categories, though, and scribes are still puzzled by the number of special characters that seem to represent unique words thrown into the mix.

Missing Magic

The more settled Nestor's Wood becomes, the more traces of ancient not-cat life are dug up by new villages clearing the ground to make their homes and gardens. While the runestones and archaeological finds point to magic and the aspects, there currently seems to be no aspect-type magic on Not-Earth (much as there is no particular sense of magic on Earth).

The not-cats have dug up countless artifacts and devices that look like they once held supernatural properties, but all of them have since drained of energy. The landscape looks like it might have once been molded by forces beyond what naturally occurs, but nothing of the sort seems to remain. Old alchemical workstations, long crumbled into disrepair, seem to hint at the use of alchemy, but none of the recipes recovered work. Almost as if the aspects were drained out of the planet by a past event.

There is no reason to doubt that the aspects once existed fully as a part of daily not-cat life long, long time ago, but it seems that whatever energy was driving that has since disappeared.
