so obviously no one really knows this yet, because it's not out, but how is multi-classing going to work in adventuring?

Like, do you level each class separately, and whatever class the cat is set to at the moment is what it counts as? so a level 6 ranger switching to scout for the first time will be a level 1 scout and act like any other level 1. or do cats have an overall level, so a level 6 ranger will become a level 6 scout?

or do cats have an overall level and that level is their class levels added together? so a level 10 cat could be a level 6 ranger and level 4 scout?

my main concern is hitting a level cap while trying to figure out which class fits a cat best. if there's an overall level cap, and leveling in any classes counts against the cat's overall level, then you could run into the situation where you can't properly experiment with the classes without limiting yourself in the future

anyway, I hope this long, slightly ramble-y post makes sense. I'm the kind of person who needs to plan everything so not knowing how it works is weary

@Mertisal Hopefully I can explain this decently enough.

Cats will level in each class separately, but the game uses their "highest level" for the purposes of things like extra health points, improved damage, and when giving out level-up reward bundles.

Once a cat hits a certain level in a class, the ability unlocked is unlocked permanently, so they can continue to use it even if they are currently leveling as a different class.

Cats can theoretically hit max level in all classes, and thus be able to use all possible abilities - but the bonus effect listed by the class will only be taken from the class that is active at that time, and they will only get the health points boost and level-up reward bundles for one class's worth.

For an example:

You set your cat as a Fighter, and level them to level 2. They'll get a level up bundle for hitting level 2, their health points will go up, and they'll unlock the Fighter 2 ability.

If you keep going, they'll get the same for level 3, and at level 4 their default die value will go up by 1.

Now you decide you want to also level them in Guardian, so you swap your cat to Guardian. Your cat can still use the Fighter 2 and 3 skills they unlocked, but the overall effect of the class will change. (So they'll have the higher HP value Guardian bonus instead of the improved melee attack die Fighter bonus.) You could change them back at any time though if desired.

When they level up to level 2 guardian, they won't get a level up bundle and their health points will stay the same, because their highest level is still only level 4. However, they will unlock the Guardian 2 skill. If they keep going all the way to level 5 Guardian, then they'll start getting reward bundles and their health points will improve again since they will be reaching a new "highest level."

@squid

Thank you so much for explaining! This makes a lot of sense to me in terms of balance--letting you benefit from leveling a cat in multiple classes but not letting you grind a ridiculous amount of extra health or level up bundles. And it means my big fears of missing out on important skills won't happen, so yay!

And keeping the other classes skills seems really fun, and like it'll unlock a lot of flexibility. Exciting! rally
