On both mobile and desktop Safari, tapping/clicking does nothing to speed up a combat turn. I thought it simply might not be implemented, but I saw other people reference doing it, and it does speed things up properly on the initial “getting attacked” screen before the combat starts.

I have animations off, but having them on did not fix the problem (the problem is why I turned them off—they made combat even slower since they couldn’t be skipped). This is causing combat to be very slow and frustrating because everything spends a few seconds slowly popping up text and pausing before the continue button appears. I love adventuring (it’s a big part of what got me into the game), but the sluggish default pace of combat is driving me slightly up a wall.

Yeah, I didn’t have an issue with this for a few days before the same happened to me. Now the text goes so slow and I can’t always even tap to speed it up. I’m usually just stuck waiting for the text to be done, which makes combat a huge drag.

Have you tried a different browser / can you confirm that this is only an issue on safari? I don't have access to an apple device of any kind so it's going to be more difficult for me to test this one.

I’ve tried a different browser now (DuckDuckGo, mobile, iOS device) and unfortunately the problem remains; I had made the assumption it was a Safari issue because that seemed to be the obvious web/mobile commonality. I talked about the issue in the unofficial Discord earlier and will try to check if the problem’s widespread in there.

Edit: On further experimentation, text outside combat doesn’t seem to speed up either—it just appears at a faster rate so I thought my tapping was doing something.

adding to this on Chrome on android: it works with animations on, no difference with animations off, but i do not really notice speeding up on pc either with them off

To clarify, is the speeding up issue related to the text speed or the rate of confirmation buttons appearing and disappearing? These are no longer tied to each other, so while hitting any key or tapping the screen should make the text go faster, it won't make the buttons appear more quickly.

(It's hard for me to fuss with it now since I don't know whether this will still be an issue after the next update. On my working version of the site, you're now able to set a default text speed in your account settings separate from animations, which is why the buttons and text got pulled apart last week.)

Both. The text takes a noticeable amount of time to appear at each step of the turn, and tapping fails to speed it up. The buttons also don’t appear faster, but that wouldn’t be as much of an issue if the text would go quicker—it takes almost as long for each “[cat/enemy] does [x]” message to appear as it takes for the button to show up after the turn is complete.

Edit: Is it possible that the pre-update broke the ability to speed up text manually?

Definitely useful to know for everyone experiencing this:

Additional portion to this: Could you possibly try clearing your cache and see if that helps? The changes were in a javascript file and those do get cached by devices and so if you have an old one that might explain things not working quite right.

Clearing the cache didn’t fix it, except insofar as my browser appears to be less laggy in general. There’s still a small unskippable delay between the dice/first-step text appearing and the second-step text appearing (cache clearing made that shorter, so I assume the time it took was lag, but did not make tapping speed it), and a longer one between that and the “[x] blocked the attack/the attack hit!” text appearing. (Then another longer one before the button, but I gather that’s the intended behavior.)

Animations have been off, because tapping didn’t speed those up either and so everything took forever with them on.

Text does appear immediately on exploration scenes, the die roll->(pause)->result->(pause)->button process is the one that can’t be sped up. Pauses there appear about the same length, though I may be mis-estimating.
