@DeeryLou i use FireAlpaca and ms paint. firealpaca is free and can save images as transparent png. i'm more confident with paint but it can't save transparent.

Anything with a hard pencil brush and layers should be good. Free art programs are Gimp, Paint.NET, and Krita. I'd look into them and see which looks the best!

Photopea is also an in-browser option if you don't want to download anything.
