A name whispered quietly to misbehaving children in the dark at bedtime, whispered throughout the City, to keep the story alive. To keep the legend alive. To keep the ones taken by the mountain, and their memories, alive.
In the City, from not-cat to not-cat, were tales told of a tall, dangerous mountain- Augur's Summit.
It is said that if you were to climb the mountain in its entirety and make it up to the peak, safe and sound, a single wish would be granted. However, any who have attempted the climb have dropped off about halfway through the duration of the climb, their locations blipping out into seemingly nowhere as they phased through our world and entered the Great Unknown. Their lives taken in exchange for the wishes they made.
The bodies of those who went missing have never been found. The search parties could never locate them, and the search parties could never be located, either. The trails were closed. The proper precautions were taken. Friends and families mourned the losses of their kin and loved ones.
The Summit stands as a bleak reminder of those who are lost and a warning for those attempting to escape the found. A cautionary tale for children who stray too far from the path, a terrifying reality to those who have lost and those who are missing.
And, yet, they couldn't manage to keep everyone out.
Following the public closure of Augur's Summit, up to 100 estimated people have been reported to have gone missing, all pointing to the Summit. All ages, all backgrounds, desperately risking their necks for one request, and losing themselves in the process. A different life? A cure for a life-ending illness? A scapegoat; to end all of the evils in the world, at the cost of their own life? What could possibly equate the value of a living, breathing being?
I suppose I could always ask you, couldn't I? I mean, you're here, aren't you? You've reached Augur's Summit.
Tell me, then; what is it you seek?
