What is a Kira Kira Name?
In order to understand what is a Kira Kira name, we must first understand more context behind the history of Kira Kira names. キラキラ, also known as "kira kira" in roman alphabets, is a Japanese onomatopoeia for "shiny", "sparkling", "glittering" or "twinkling". Basically, it is anything that sparkles or glistens. It can mean something is brand new or attractive. It can also be used figuratively! When a character is expressed to be showing "kira kira signs", it can mean that they are excited, in awe, in admiration, or even in love.

The Importance of Naming in Japan
Now let's understand the culture of naming in Japan. Names, especially "First Names" or "Given Names", are called 名前 (Namae). Japan has a very unique perspective on naming a child. This is because Japanese has a fundamental writing system tied to Chinese characters called "Kanji". Within Kanji characters, they are written in such a way that represents the meaning assigned to them. Kanji is written by strokes. And each stroke is meaningfully designed to represent a pictorial aspect of what the Kanji represents.

For example, this Kanji is called "Kawa", which represents "River". It is comprised of 3 similarly-lengthed strokes going downwards, with the left stroke tilting towards the left. It is written as such to represent the flowing of a calm, long river. When the Kanji for River is used with objects or people's names, it represents the spiritual or figurative aspect of a river: calm, long, overflowing, deep, refreshment- Similar to creating poetry! It can mean more than ten different things and YOU get to decide what it truly represents.

With such importance to naming someone, another type of name was created called, 苗字 (Myouji). It literally represents someone's intended "Surname" or "Last Name", also known as their "Family Name". This is because name-bearers would want their family traditions or characteristics to be passed on to their offspring. As a result, Myouji is very common in Japan, which could represent a giant lineage of a family tree. But, it also means that most common Myoujis are traditional, lacking a new and refreshing meaning or significance. And sometimes, traditions are boring.

Why You Should Give a Good Name
With the amount of weight and impact a name holds, it is like sealing the fate or destiny to the beholder of the name. As such, you do not want to give an ordinary, boring name. If you do give a dull name, the worst that could happen is that the name-bearer is bullied for life or is struck by the misfortune or insignificance of their name. Thus, this is where Kira Kira names comes into play. They give the impression of a bestowed gift to the name-bearer, granting them the best shot at life. It is like creating a destiny for someone! And it's glorious and amazing!

Types of Kira Kira Names
There are 4 types of Kira Kira naming styles to peruse, each with different ways to showcase the creativity and significance the name-giver would like to bestow upon the name-bearer. It is even possible that a Kira Kira name can make use of the combinations between all 4 styles! Some Kira Kira Names tend to be made up of 2 first names (Namae). One of them will be chosen as the real first name (Namae) and the other serving as the last name / family name (Myouji). (This is provided if an individual wants to sever ties with their family, I guess.)

1. Pronunciation Replacement
Typically in Kanji, there is a set of rules for reading the pronunciations called "Kun" and "On" reading. They are basically the Japanese way and Chinese way of reading a Kanji character respectively. Name-givers would either switch the "Kun-pronunciation" or "On-pronunciation" to give a "better sound" to the name. In some cases, the pronunciation replaced will be entirely new!

In Example
Myouji (Surname / Last Name / Family Name)
影山
Kageyama

"Kageyama" is a very common family name in Japan. Sometimes, it refers to a specific big family alliance or clan.
Literal Translation: 影 (Kage / Ei) - Shadow / Silhouette
Literal Translation: 山 (Yama / San) - Mountain
Combined Literal Translation: Mountain Shadow / The Shadow of a Mountain

Kira Kira Name
影山
Kajiyama

The pronunciation for 影 has been replaced from "Kage" to "Kaji".
As a result, the meaning and translation remain the same.

2. Kanji Replacement / Substitution
The opposite of Pronunciation Replacement, it basically retains the Kun-pronunciation or On-pronunciation of a name, replacing the Kanji instead. This can be due to different Kanji characters having the same Kun-pronunciations or On-pronunciations. There are a few reasons to change the Kanji character of a name. It could be to change the entire meaning of the name or retain the same meaning but make the name more complicated or less complicated to write. More strokes mean more complexity, which can mean a more "powerful" name. At the same time, fewer strokes mean less complexity, which can mean it is easier to remember, which creates convenience.

In Example
Namae (First Name / Given Name)

Aoi

Literal Translation: Blue

Kira Kira Name
青井
Aoi

The Kanji for "Aoi" has been replaced from 碧 to 青井.
As a result, the meaning and translation have been changed.
Literal Translation: 青 (Ao / Sei / Shou) - Blue / Pure / Young / Youth / Refreshing
Literal Translation: 井 (I / Sei / Shou) - Well / Town / Community

3. Foreign Name
Foreign names, go figure, are names that do not sound "Japanese", and come from foreign countries that are not Japan. If you want to give your name-bearer a foreign name (in Japanese context) but still retain some level of Japanese culture and significance, you would basically assign Kanji characters to the foreign name of your choice. Basically, you are making up the Kanji characters that represent that foreign name.

In Example
Foreign Name (First Name / Given Name)
マリア
Maria

A historical feminine name of Latin origin.
Literal Translation: Of the sea / Bitter / Beloved / Rebellious

Kira Kira Name #1
莉愛
Maria

The name for Maria has been converted to Kanji characters (莉愛).
As a result, new meanings and translations have been added.
Even the original Kun-pronunciations and On-pronunciations have also been changed.
Literal Translation: 莉 (Ri / Rai / Rei) - Jasmine Flower
Literal Translation: 愛 (Ai / Mana) - Love / Affection / Cherishing

Kira Kira Name #2
鞠亜
Maria

By changing the Kanji characters to 鞠亜, the meanings and translations are also changed.
Literal Translation: 鞠 (Mari / Kiku / Kyuu) - Ball / Round / Circulation
Literal Translation: 亜 (A) - Asia / Next / Comes after / "A" sound for foreign words or names

4. Associated Meaning
This naming style basically means the name-giver assigns a completely original, unique name, or name taken from inspiration to the name-bearer. This is done to imbue specific characteristics or traits onto the name-bearer. It is also the most flashiest, unusual, and foreign-sounding naming style in terms of Japanese context, even more foreign than foreign names! This style is also the only style that can ignore the conventional pronunciation for Kun-pronunciations and On-pronunciations, which could make for some funny names! If you want your name-bearer to attract attention like a spotlight, this is by far the most flamboyant style!

In Example #1
Made-Up Name (First Name / Given Name)
ナサ
NASA

NASA is the acronym for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, located in the United States.
Reason for Outrageous Name: I want this name-bearer to have a heart as vast as space itself!

Kira Kira Name
星空
Nasa

星空 is a real Japanese word called, "Hoshizora", which means starry sky.
However, a completely new pronunciation has been given to it to create a double meaning.
The double meaning could be that the name-bearer will "have a heart as vast as space itself" and "work hard like a NASA employee".
Literal Translation: 星 (Hoshi / Sei / Shou) - Star
Literal Translation: 空 (Sora / Kara / Kuu) - Sky / Empty / Void

In Example #2
Name Taken from Inspiration (First Name / Given Name)
ピカチュウ
Pikachuu

This name is derived from a popular mascot of the Pokémon franchise named "Pikachu".
"Pikachu" comes from 2 meanings: "Pika pika", is the sound of sparks, and "chu chu" is the sound of mice squeaking.
Literal Translation: "Sparkle Chu" / A mouse that goes "sparkle sparkle" or "pika pika"

Kira Kira Name
光宙
Pikachuu

Since the original name for Pikachu is not in Kanji, name-givers would assign Kanji characters associated with the Pokémon.
光 does not have a "pika" pronunciation but is often used to mean sparkling or shining lights.
宙 has an On-reading of "chuu", meaning space or the Universe.
In this case, the Kanji is selected because of a double meaning.
It can mean both the popular Pokémon mascot and "The light that sparkles in Space".
Literal Translation: 光 (Kou / Hikari) - Light
Literal Translation: 宙 (Chuu) - Space / The Universe

Acquaintances, strangers and businesses must always refer to one's family name instead.
Essentially-

Restrictions & Limitations to My Services
I know how excited and eager clients can be when they realize they can create any sort of name with Japanese Kanji characters. However, I would like to establish certain rules and limitations to my services.

1. No Kira Kira Names of criminals.
2. No Kira Kira Names of controversial people.
3. No Kira Kira Names representing countries.
4. No Kira Kira Names representing swears and vulgarities.
5. No Kira Kira Names representing corporates and organizations.

If you are a name-giver, I want you to give a meaningful name to the name-bearer. By choosing my services, you are agreeing to meaningfully and ethically give a name that will not inflict hardship or curses onto the name-bearer.

However, if you want to give an edgy Kira Kira Name to your rebel / troublemaker non-cat, I am open to that too as long as you still give love and thought to them.

Closing Statement
Names are special. Calling someone by name shows they are more than a living thing with a soul. They are souls with emotions, traits, dreams, and autonomy. If you share this same value with me, we can create the most beautiful and meaningful names for name-bearers and give a bright future for them.
