Starville not-cats are known to have unusual long names, though they usually just use nicknames. For example, the village founder's name is Mystic Elk, but they are simply known as Elk. Some not-cats choose not to use nicknames, such as the merchant Tall Cat, and some cats only have one name in the first place, like the teacher Meadowsweet. Often, beans are given only one name at birth, and then they choose their own second name later on.

Many not-cats are named after Cervidae (animals in the deer family). It is considered good luck, and it is theorised that cats with these names have a stronger natural connection to Nestor, though this is not proven.
