In October 2022, he made a cameo appearance in the episode The Power of the Doctor. Prior to this, his last appearance in the show had been in the story The Chase in June 1965. With this return, William Russell broke the Guinness World Record for “Longest gap between TV appearances as the same character”. This new record of 57 years, 3 months, and 28 days beat the previous record of 43 years (held by Phillip Lowrie as Dennis Tanner in Coronation Street) by a considerable amount.
So not only is Ian a very likeable character, he also beat a world record by 14 years!
