I just built Stick Canopy Shelter, but is it purely decorative? I have to say I'm disappointed if it is.

Stick Canopy Shelter is indeed decorative, to be used in your Scenery!
If an item unlocks something when crafted, there will be a disclaimer under it.
I recommend building a Bonfire first if you haven't done that yet! It's under Builder in Crafting Workshops.

@Blueberries If something unlocks an occupation, it's detailed in the crafting menu. You can see that in the image above, and for things like Gardens either stone (under Mason) or regular fenced ones (under builder), it lists all the occupations unlocked, and the Schoolhouse, for example, has an additional note that specialty occupations need the Village Lodge to unlock as well
