winds aren't the equivalent of gender, not-cats don't have a concept of gender at least not in a societal sense

If not-cats had sexualities like humans, maybe a couple including cat that uses she/her pronouns and a cat that uses he/him pronouns would be the closest to straight. But I headcanon that not-cats kinda don’t have labels like ours.

This is what the official tutorial section has to say about not-cat gender and sex: "Rather than sex, not-cats have four different 'winds'. This can be thought of as X, Y, Both, or Neither, and is distinct from a cat's gender or the pronouns they use. These winds do come with a few stereotypes, but they are more trends and socially-constructed than a general rule. Many cats do not fit into these boxes."

This is part of the description of the pride flag store: "It seems these colors have a special significance back on Earth."

Taken together, I think it's quite clear that not-cats have a gender and sex spectrum that is not comparable to gender and sex spectrums as understood by humans. Remember that in real life, among humans, these things are also constructed and differ between cultures! So it makes perfect sense that an alien species has a totally different system than anything seen on Earth. Asking if a not-cat couple is "straight" is like asking if the number 8 is blue.

The pride shop is mostly for us, the players, rather than the cats but some may relate to the experiences (you will need to scroll down a bit for the answer).

Ultimately it's up to the player how their cats identify. Some may give their cats genders even beyond wind (especially if they are based on their OCs or characters from media) and so they may end up straight in their own lore. I have a few cats that are based on female OCs, and they are all either south, trade, or north wind, so it doesn't really mean anything.

In terms of sticking completely to not-cat lore, it's not really a good comparison, though, as straight/heterosexuality imply an "opposite" — there are four winds, so who is truly opposite? What combination of North/South, North/Trade, North/Null, South/Trade, South/Null, or Trade/Null count as "opposite"? Their system does not lend well to the terms that humans on real-earth use. I do agree with the above statement of asking if the number 8 is blue (barring synesthesia, of course; it may in fact be blue to someone!).

I headcanon that not-cats work exactly like regular animals but the winds essentially separate them into semi-compatible species.
...maybe that's why my cats use m/f pronouns exclusively because it helps me keep track of this. I like science more than magic, so my lore operates closer to science. So yes, my cats do have a concept of "straight" and "gay."

@Nae If we're just going by wind, I'm pretty sure same-wind pairings that can't reproduce for that reason alone - meaning North/North or South/South pairings - would count as "opposites" in that system. (Trade/Trade pairings can still reproduce, and Nulls can't have biological kittens at all, so both Trade/Trade and Null/Null pairings would probably be in this weird gray area compared to the other combinations out there.)

@JadeJester22 I actually have a similar HC (except I see not-cats on Earth as all part of the same species and the "Winds" as additional compatibility markers within said species).

I personally see not-cat gender being based more on personality, expression through clothing, etc. While they canonically don’t really have gender roles, if they did the roles probably wouldn’t be just masculine and feminine. They would probably be closer to “Northish”, “Southish”, “Tradeish” and “Nullish”, on account that they have four sexes instead of two. That is just my personal opinion.

personally i don't rlly see my cats as like ....... having genders at all ? they just have pronouns lol and while i might call a cat that uses she/her a "girl" or he/him a "boy" i don't rlly mean them in a gender sense and for me winds r literally just an indicator or whether two cats r compatible to breed, i've never thought of them in a way that represents gender / sex
