I've seen a few users with the misunderstanding that if you quote someone's post on the forums, it'll automatically notify them.

One possible solution is to include a tooltip or some other notice on the forum formatting interface that quoting doesn't ping.

Another idea is to automatically insert a ping to the user when the "Quote" button is clicked. For example, if I clicked quote on one of my own posts, the comment box would be pre-filled with this, rather than just the quotation itself.

This way, a user can intuitively be shown that the [ quote ] code itself doesn't ping, and can just delete the ping if pinging is not their intention.


A separate issue is pings that are edited into or removed from a post. It might be useful to have another notice when a user clicks "Edit" that any pings they add or delete will not be accurately reflected in notifications.

I really like the idea of including the ping by default to show users that it's not a part of the standard quote! I wouldn't be opposed to a tooltip for it, either. I quite like the idea of one for edited posts.

@Nestor nope! Neither does quoting someone. Sometimes I’ll have something that I edit but then I’m like ‘oh I forgot to tag them’ so I make a new reply with just @ their name, so that they get pinged, and then delete that post.

Suggestion: A bubble maybe to the left of the reply box (idk I’m on iPad so there’s some space over there, might not work on mobile though.) that says ‘This will ping (user)’

I think it’s kind of funny to work around; it’s part of the reason i have so many pce tabs open at once. Art shops I want to look back at, an adventuring tab is almost always open— I have one item sales thread I just refresh every couple of hours because the person keeps pinging ‘@Williow’ so it doesn’t reach me.
