The Snowdrop Chronicle
The Official Newspaper of Snowdrop Glade



A small group of not-cats arrived in Nestor’s Wood at the tail end of winter and stumbled across a glade deep in the woods, teeming with snowdrops. They quickly decided that this would be the site of their new home.

Soon the tiny cluster of cottages became a bustling village, and a pair of friends had an idea—why not start a local newspaper?

Hello! For my village, I thought it would be fun to write lore in the format of a (very small) newspaper. My goal is for a new issue to come out twice every in-game season, once on the 1st and once on the 24th. Each issue will have an article or two about major events in the village or site-wide events, along with a few smaller columns (advice, gossip, fake classifieds, etc.).

I play entirely on mobile, so if the formatting looks strange, please let me know! If you are on a small screen, the right column will likely be cut off and you may need to scroll or swipe to see it.

SUMMER 24, YEAR 7 — VOLUME 1

NEW LODGE, NEW LEADERSHIP
Snowdrop Glade has reached an exciting new milestone: after a long period of construction, the village lodge has finally opened its doors. And residents seem to be enthused about it already.
“It’s really quite exciting,” says Aulis, the foreman on the project. “We now have a central place for all sorts of things—celebrations, classes, announcements…” He makes a face. “And all that bureaucratic nonsense, too, I guess.”
“It makes Snowdrop Glade feel like a real village!” says Blodeuyn, another one of the many not-cats who assisted with the project. “Before we were just like a little cluster of cabins in the woods. But now with the lodge, and some of the other infrastructure that’s been built, and all the new not-cats moving in… we’re starting to feel like the real deal.”
But new buildings aren’t the only thing coming Snowdrop Glade’s way. With the growth of the village over the last few seasons, some say it’s time for a revamp of how the village is lead.
“So far I have been leading in a role similar to mayor. It is all very informal, and was just… thrown together quickly when the village was founded,” explains Tesni. “But the village has been growing, and that does not work as well any more. And I would like everyone to have a say in who the mayor is—not just ‘Tesni went through the portal first, she’s in charge now!’” she finishes with a laugh.
It was only after long discussions with fellow residents that a new plan began to take shape. The village would elect a new mayor every two years, who would in turn select a small group to assist with various duties. Voting for mayor would open the 25th of summer each year and close at sundown on the 48th of summer, with blank ballots being picked up at the village lodge and completed ballots being placed in the locked drop box there.
“There are still some things to iron out, but it is a good start,” says Tesni. “And I am eager to see who is elected to take my place.”

Dear Baran,
My child is very shy. They seem perfectly content just coming along with me while I work or playing by themselves. But I would like to encourage them to make friends, especially since another kitten around their age just moved nearby. What can I do to help them?

Dear Worried Parent,
First, don’t push them too hard. Some cats are just a little more shy! Keep including them in your day-to-day activities so they regularly see new faces. And try reaching out to the other family as well. If they’re new to the village, they might be looking friends for their child too.
Additionally, have you considered finding your child a companion? A pet chicken or bunny would give them an easy topic to discuss with potential friends and comfort them if they start to get nervous.

THE NOT-CAT THAT KNOWS EVERYTHING
I am quite pleased to have been given space in this paper in order to share the small, everyday happenings of our village. To protect the modesty of my neighbors, I will refer to them by only their first initial, as it seems only right to offer them the same anonymity that I have obtained for myself.
I must start with a scolding, unfortunately—surely T is familiar with the concept of respecting others’ belongings? And yet somehow my favorite bowls ended up on the floor in her presence. I expected better, but I suppose it is good to be reminded that a lovely face is not always paired with lovely manners!
In other news, our dear D, who quite clearly still pines after A, seems to have gone on his own spree of breaking hearts this summer. I have heard that he has turned down several requests to be partners, including one from T and two from C. ‘The course of true love never did run smooth,’ as they say on Earth, but I wonder if things will ever be happily resolved.
To close my piece, my dear readers, I would like to thank you for your time. Any complaints or inquiries can be directed to the offices of this paper, but you should not bother—for I shall not read them.

AUTUMN 1, YEAR 7 — VOLUME 2

ELECTION RESULTS ARE IN
Voting has closed for Snowdrop Glade’s first-ever election for mayor, and we are pleased to announce that the results are in! Receiving forty-three of the fifty votes cast, Arianwen is the new mayor of Snowdrop Glade!
Arianwen had the following to share after the votes were tallied: ”Thank you all for the faith you have put in me. Please know that I value the community we have built here, and I will do everything in my power to ensure it continues to flourish.”
When asked what their first task as mayor would be, they responded, “I’m glad you asked! As I mentioned, our community is important to me, but we’ve been growing so quickly recently that I fear that close-knit feeling is being lost. Therefore, I’d like to invite all residents to a town meeting to brainstorm ideas for some sort of harvest festival in a few weeks. What better way to bring everyone together—and celebrate everyone’s hard work—than a party?”
So there you have it, folks—sounds like Arianwen wants to start off their term with a bang! Make sure to attend the planning meeting if you can!

My sister and I haven’t really been speaking since I found out what she named one of her kittens. About a year ago, she and I talked about kitten names and I told her a very meaningful name I’m planning on giving my daughter if I have one. She ended up using this name for her daughter!
Am I wrong in being upset? When I said something to her about it, she just said that her partner really likes the name and it’s not a big deal for cousins to have the same name.

I understand that it feels like she took something special away from you, but I would urge you to try and let those feelings go and not let this ruin your relationship with your sister or your niece.
While I do feel like it was slightly inconsiderate of her, knowing how meaningful the name is to you, she and her partner have the right to use the name—just as you still do. There is nothing stopping you from using the name for your child one day too.

THE NOT-CAT THAT KNOWS EVERYTHING
Greetings to all my readers, both new and old. For those unfamiliar with my articles, my purpose in writing is to share some of the more mundane happenings within our village.
It has been quite fascinating watching the flurry of activity around the village over the last few weeks. I am choosing to believe that everyone simply wished for more friends, but a more cynical sort would probably call it politicking.
In other news, summer must be the season for heartbreak. I have heard of several more refusals of proposals, including a very firm rejection from A when A proposed to her (how confusing; I should rethink my method of disguising my subjects’ identities). It seems something is in the air. Perhaps the weather is making everyone disagreeable; it has been most unpleasant recently.
Speaking of unpleasant things, I find myself quite vexed by our new mail carrier. It makes one wish they had a hound with a fondness for chasing postmen…
And with that image, my dear readers, I must bid you all goodbye. Responses and inquiries can be addressed to the village lodge, but keep in mind that I generally do not care for letters and will probably throw them out.

AUTUMN 25, YEAR 7 — VOLUME 3

THE HARVEST FESTIVAL APPROACHES
Snowdrop Glade’s first-ever festival is quickly approaching, and we have all the details! What was originally planned to be a single-day celebration has ballooned into a multi-day event, so there is lots to cover!
Day 1 (Autumn 29) — The festival will open with a feast celebrating and giving thanks for a bountiful harvest. The feast is expected to begin around noon, and will be followed by a farmers’ market. Expect to see both local and traveling vendors peddling their goods! Additionally, if you are interested in entering a gourd-carving contest, you can pick up your gourd any time on the 29th.
Day 2 (Autumn 30) — Anyone interested in a more competitive game of star ball can sign up to take part in a star ball tournament on the afternoon of the 30th. Signups close at noon and the tournament will begin shortly after. Please note that this may be postponed or rescheduled if it rains. The day will conclude with a dance party beginning at sundown!
Day 3 (Autumn 31) — Judging for the gourd carving contest begins midmorning, so make sure to get your entries in before then! Winners will be announced and prizes awarded during the festival’s closing feast, which will begin at noon.
And that’s a wrap for the festival’s planned events! Expect lots of spontaneous dance-offs and impromptu casual games of star ball as well. Hope to see you there!

Dear Baran,
One of my friends has always been a little inconsiderate, but they’ve gotten worse recently. At first it was relatively minor things: they painted a mural on someone’s house without asking permission, they broke a bunch of bowls belonging to their neighbor, that sort of thing. But recently they were playing around and injured an acquaintance of ours. And in all these situations I’ve been the one who had to step in and smooth things over—it never even occurs to them to apologize.
Honestly, I’m getting tired of cleaning up after them. I feel like I’m constantly having to apologize on their behalf. What do I do?

Dear Fed Up,
if you haven’t done so already, you may want to try sitting your friend down and having a straightforward conversation with them about their actions and their impact on yourself and others. If your friend is simply being thoughtless, this should hopefully serve as a wake-up call.
If it turns out your friend simply doesn’t care about their impact on others, you should reevaluate your friendship with them. At minimum, you should stop trying to fix the problems they are causing and let them handle the fallout. If I were you, I would strongly reconsider if I even wanted to be friends any longer.

THE NOT-CAT THAT KNOWS EVERYTHING
The village has been overtaken by a sort of frenetic energy as preparations for our first festival continue, but I find myself mostly sitting and pondering on love. Not my own love life, of course—I do not think that is in the cards for me!
I think it is A—r and L—n’s relationship that has made my thoughts turn in this direction. While by all accounts they are well-matched and their children are darling, the speed at which they progressed from mere acquaintances to partners with children was—quite frankly—astonishing.
Or perhaps it is the curious case of A—s that has me dwelling on these things? For all summer his attentions were received quite warmly by S—a, and to all appearances they seemed quite genuine. And yet a few days ago, without a word to anyone, he gathered his belongings and removed himself from the village. I would dearly love to know why he left, but I suppose the answer is out of our reach now…
With that, my dear readers, I will bid you adieu. I expect I will be seeing many of you at the upcoming festival—I will be keeping my ear to the ground for any interesting conversations while there.

THE SNOWDROP CHRONICLE

WINTER 1, YEAR 7 — VOLUME 4

A group of hunters gathered around a campfire.

WINTER IS HERE
Winter has finally come to Snowdrop Glade! This will be the first winter on Not-Earth for many residents, so for most of the village, anticipation is high.
“I am so excited, I love winter,” exclaims Ciara, a local artist, when asked for her feelings on the upcoming season. “This will actually be my second winter on Not-Earth, but of course I was living in a different village last year. My previous village was further south, so I’m excited to see how different this winter will be.”
There are, however, a few residents with more mixed feelings on the upcoming season.
“Honestly? I hate snow.” says Aeron, the village’s current mail carrier. “The rest of winter is fine or whatever, but snow? Bane of my existence. Do you know hard it makes mail delivery?”
Whether you’re dreading the upcoming weeks or looking forward to them, we at The Snowdrop Chronicle have a few recommendations we’d like to pass along.
Get outside! Winter lasts a long time, and it’ll feel longer if you’re cooped up inside all day away from the wind. Try your paw at ice fishing, have a snowball fight with your friends, have a cup of tea with your neighbors—do something that gets you outside and having fun!
Stay warm! Your fur might not be enough on the coldest days. Bundle up! And make sure to protect your ears—they’re delicate!
Stay safe! For all its beauty, winter can be a dangerous time as well. Always test the ice before you go out on it. And if you get wet, get inside and get dry immediately. The cold can be deadly.

DEAR BARAN
Dear Baran,
One of my children has an imaginary(?) friend. I didn’t think anything of it at first. (I had one around their age as well!) But my child has been talking about it more and more often, and recently it’s gotten alarming.
First it was little things like asking for an extra cup of tea or a spare ribbon to give to their friend. I never did see the cups or the ribbon again, but I just figured they were lost around the house somewhere. (You know how it is with children!) But recently they were playing with a toy I know I’ve never seen before, and when I asked where they got it they said their friend left it on the windowsill for them.
Since then I have been so worried. I know Not-Earth is much safer than Earth was, but I don’t like not knowing who or what is out there! I’ve asked the neighbors and my other children if they’ve seen anything unusual, and no one has. I stayed up all night to see if anyone is coming by the house, and saw nothing. What do I do?

Dear Haunted,
It does sound like there may be more than just an "imaginary" friend. I would not panic though; our part of Not-Earth is rather safe, and we have Nestor looking out for us. You might consider going directly to Nestor and asking what they know. You could also try reaching out to Gardenhome University; one of the researchers or professors might have an answer.
In the meantime, keep your eyes and ears open, and ask your neighbors to do the same. It doesn’t sound like your child’s “friend” means any harm, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

THE NOT-CAT THAT KNOWS EVERYTHING
I must say I am quite pleased that the bustle of autumn has finally come to an end. In recent weeks I frequently found myself yearning for the silence and stillness of snowy winter evenings.
Our recent festival, while certainly enjoyable, was full of the sort of foolishness that many a young not-cat like to engage in. S—i and C—n imbibed far too much of the watermeowlon punch during the opening festivities, and I fear my hearing will never truly recover from their singing. And I am quite certain I was not alone in noticing that B—h spent the entirety of both feasts sighing and gazing at N—h. It seems to me that a frank conversation between the two would likely end her despondency, for was N—h not also sneaking glances at her every time her back was turned?
Now that the festival has passed us, I find myself putting my attention towards other matters. Namely—the inn. Construction was supposed to begin this summer, and yet autumn is drawing to a close without any progress having been made. In all fairness, I must acknowledge that A—s has been quite busy these last few weeks, assisting the less dexterous of our village with maintenance and repairs. But this does not justify the lack of activity throughout the summer and early autumn! I do believe that an explanation is in order.

work on?
It seems like I spend most of
my time making nails. There’s
been a lot of construction
going on the village, after all.
But I did recently get a jewelry
order. Sometimes it’s nice to
do something different.
Working with iron is definitely
my favorite though… jewelry
can be finicky.
What’s your favorite thing
to do when not smithing?
I love poking around the
mines… And reading! The
library’s gotten in some great
books on metalworking for
me.

WINTER 26, YEAR 7 — VOLUME 5

Outside the library on a cold, foggy day—apparently the perfect weather for ghosts.

FOLLOWING UP ON OUR LAST ISSUE
Some of our readers might remember last issue’s “Ask Baran”, in which Baran was asked to weigh in on a kitten’s not-so-imaginary friend. Based off of the letters to the editor received since that issue ran, not everyone agreed with Baran’s advice to not panic.
So we decided an investigation of our own was in order.
We reached out to a former resident of Snowdrop Village currently studying the aspects at Gardenhome University, who put us in touch with one of their professors.
“We are familiar with the phenomenon mentioned in your letter,” the professor wrote in response to our inquiry. “There do appear to be some sort of spirits living in Nestor’s Wood. As far as our researchers can tell, they are not ghosts—at least, not not-cat ghosts—and they are perfectly harmless. They seem to like foggy, cool days, which is why this one might have decided to make its presence known to your village now.”
As for the toy the letter writer mentioned? Well, it turns out that these spirits are a generous sort. “We have seen them leave behind little trinkets and sometimes even coins. Again, as far as we can tell, these gifts are perfectly harmless. No signs of hauntings or ancient curses.”
So there you have it, folks! We’re not alone in the woods after all… but it sounds like that might not be a bad thing.

DEAR BARAN
Dear Baran,
There is one village rule that is seriously annoying me!!! I think it needs to go and the mayor should be recalled for implementing it, but no one seems to agree with me. Most of my friends think it’s not a big deal and I should stop ”bothering” them about it. And my arch-nemesis has started patting me on the head and telling me to “calm down” in a very condescending voice every time I bring it up. What do I do???

Dear Very Upset,
First, you should change your approach. Browbeating your friends is not going to get the rule amended or removed (I am very curious to know which rule is so upsetting, by the way.) Instead, make a well-reasoned and/or very loud appeal to those who actually have the power to change the rule.
Secondly, I am not a big fan of being told to calm down when I am upset… It generally has the opposite effect. My partner recommends that you bite your “arch-nemesis” next time, and I might actually agree.

THE NOT-CAT THAT KNOWS EVERYTHING
I find that I do not have much to share at the present, for it has been intolerably cold recently, and I have not been inclined to trudge through the snow to converse with my neighbors—and they quite clearly have felt the same disinclination to come visit with me. Our recent weather is the kind best appreciated from the warmth and safety of one’s own home, with a window and a sturdy door between oneself and the wind.
I frequently return to the concerns I raised in the previous issue. I wonder if the lack of progress, or news of any sort, on the inn is due to the candidates for innkeeper. A—l is still quite young, with all the impetuousness of youth, and I fear she lacks the necessary dedication to serve in the role. D—h spends more hours away from the village than in it; I am perplexed that he is taken seriously as a candidate for innkeeper, especially when he has shown no preference for the role. And A—n would likely prove as unsatisfactory as an innkeeper as they are a mail carrier; I am more suitable for the role than they are.

Hello there! I’m Bryn. I’ve
been away from the village
for a little while traveling,
but I thought I should drop
by to spend some time with
my moms and little siblings
and then got snagged for this
interview!
I’m sure they were all very
excited to see you again!
Did you have some cool
stories for them?
Oh yeah! They especially liked
hearing about Crescent Lake;
my siblings have never seen it
before.
What’s been your favorite
part of your travels?
I’ve gotten to see what life’s
like outside Snowdrop Village
and I’ve had tons of time to
think about what I want to do
with my life. It’s been super
useful—I’m kinda thinking
everyone born in the village
should spend at least a little
time traveling before they
settle down.
