With my not-cats first beans on the way, I have been developing the village lore a little bit more!

For my village, earth born not-cats get their name from Nestor, and any village born beans go to visit Nestor with their family to be given names once they have their eyes open. Before their Nestor given names, they are often called little pet names based on physical attributes, like Fluff, Shiver, or Grey. Oftentimes these pet names show up in their Nestor given names, it's never questioned how they know.


How does your village handle names? I'd love to hear all the lore!!

I love the thought put into your naming system! I don't really have any lore for naming, I just choose something (typically nature based) that seems to suit their appearance and personality

I've been curious if anyone uses warrior cats naming conventions- the life stages system is well suited to it

Haha, coincidence given the above reply, but I use Warrior Cats naming conventions. (And I am certainly not the only one; I have seen several other villages do this.)

Everyone in my village is named after birds, and I have a sheet where I make sure that no prefix or suffix is duplicated. (This is getting difficult in the suffix department, as I've referenced the wiki and have apparently used nearly every suffix that has been officially used, so I've had to branch off with my own.)
Maybe it is silly that I chose birds instead of fish considering I've decided to call myself RiverClan, but that is because I really love birds. No deeper reason.

(Anyone who does not have a Warrior Cats name has their own circumstances. Either they're a cat I'm going to sell or city at some point, or they're a fancat, or they're Doppelganger, who I just have because I bought a cat and then an exact visual duplicate of them showed up at Nestor the day after, and I found it so hilarious I decided to build them into my village's lore. They are a doppelganger, they don't need a Warrior Cats name.)

I for some reason decided to go with plant related names for all my cats. :3
Most of them are named after flowers or trees like Dandelion or Maple, but I've also got Malus (apple), Root and Mulch.

I name all my cats like that poem by T.S. Eliot (The Naming of Cats)! They have an everyday name, a more formal/particular name (although this name is not always very unique sounding, sorry Eliot), and a secret name which I keep track of but don't have in their bios. I make those ones sound really weird.

Their display names aren't strictly their everyday or formal names, though I think for the most part I went with their formal names with a few using their everyday names. It's a very loose system, mostly because I'm not very creative when it comes to making up names, but it's fun for me to play around with!

i name em after scientific names for mostly dogs / canids :) in lore most of my cats are secret doggies!

I name most of my cats after fish, but I am running into the problem that so many fish names are Sunfish, or Hagfish, or Cuttlefish, ect...
So I might have to branch out to water based plants or birds

i have no real theme for naming cats HOWEVER i do like giving matching names to siblings :33

these sillies are lantern and pumpkin!! they were born on the last day of autumn year 7 so i gave them halloweeny names


whistle and chime are both named after a type of sound i guess??


haiku, elegy, and squib are all named after a type of poetry because of their Very poetic dad


aaand bear and owl are named after woodland creatures :3

all cats in Houseplant Village are named after a plant. it doesn't have to be a plant that can be kept in a house or a specific one, but it must be a plant. there are no exceptions.

i consider it a tradition! three of the first six cats changed their name upon joining (Jade, Thistle, Marigold), so it stuck.

cats are either named by their family, friends, or by the first six! its usually based off of a cat's coat color, pattern, personality, or achievements.
for some examples, Pothos offered Tomato his name because his face was especially round and he was ginger. Buttercup and Yarrow were named by their mentors after showing exceptional strength or finesse while adventuring (both yarrow and buttercup are poisonous to cats). Bat named themself because they're edgy

as for how i decide names. i have no idea myself. i see funne plant, i name funne cat that is my Entire process lol usually its random or off of pelt color though
